JGRB Research Grants: Call for Applications
Dr Jörn Günther Rare Books is an internationally recognised specialist gallery in medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and miniatures. Through the JGRB Research Grant, we support scholars wishing to study manuscripts from our collection firsthand during a research stay in Basel.
The successful candidate will receive a stipend of 1200,- CHF to cover travel costs and accommodation in Basel. On site, the scholar will be able to study some world class manuscripts and will have access to our research library for 3-5 days.
The recipient of the grant would, where appropriate, enhance our manuscript description(s), write one blog post, and a short report on how this study feeds into ongoing researcher project(s), and provide copies of any future published research.
When?
Applications are accepted throughout the year and are evaluated on a rolling basis. One or two fellowships are awarded annually. The dates of each fellowship are arranged individually with the successful applicant so as not to conflict with our participation in international art fairs or in-house exhibitions.
Applications are reviewed as they are received. Decisions are normally communicated within 2-3 weeks. Fellowships are awarded according to the scholarly merit of the proposal, its relevance to our holdings, and the availability of places during the year.
The office is not open over weekends.
Who can apply?
We encourage applications from art historians and manuscript scholars who have completed or are near completion of their PhDs. Preference will be given to Early Career Researchers and scholars who would not otherwise be able to visit our gallery in Basel.
Our grants are intended to foster object-based manuscript research. We particularly encourage applications from scholars whose work combines the close examination of manuscripts with disciplines such as codicology, palaeography, liturgy, art history, provenance studies, and connoisseurship. Projects that engage directly with the materiality of the manuscript and its historical context are especially welcome.

Please send a short (300 words max) research proposal and CV to mc@guenther-rarebooks.com. The research proposal should include which manuscripts in our inventory you want to study.
We welcome proposals focusing on all areas of our inventory. To find out about our current manuscripts, please consult our website and past publications (Glory of the Renaissance, Mirabilia and London Calling offer a good overview of our current stock). Research may concentrate on a single object or on a thematic grouping of manuscripts. Applicants are also welcome to contact us directly if they have a specific chronological or geographical focus and would like to know whether we hold further unpublished material in our inventory.

Head of Academic Relations and Research
Mireia Castaño holds a Ph.D in Art History from the University of Geneva, with an expertise in French and Spanish 15th century art. With an interdisciplinary background in Medieval Literature, she takes care of the study and cataloguing of Dr. Jörn Günther’s manuscripts. She is the author of the monography of the Master of the Vienna Roman de la Rose (2022).
