Christmas Exhibition 2022
During this advent season, Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books will be opening the doors to the gallery at the heart of Basel to exhibit some extremelyrare examples of illumination and decoration from the middle ages and the Renaissance.
This years’ highlights include the Histoire Ancienne, a colossal decorated chronicle probably made for the French king at the end of the 14th century, and the Crawford Hours, a tiny devotional masterpiece. The Flemish Psalter manuscript shown in the photo above must also be regarded as an outstanding masterpiece, which – in all probability – was made for a beguine.
The illuminations found in these medieval books are the best examples of art from this period, and treasures like these are rarely seen outside of national collections and impressive private libraries.
Medieval manuscripts, miniatures and early printed books will be on display from:
December 6 to 16, 2022, Monday to Friday.
Our opening times are: 10 am 12 noon, and 2 pm to 5 pm at Antiquariat Dr. Jörn Günther, Spalenberg 55, 4051 Basel.
Free guided, bespoke tours by experts are possible for the entire duration of the exhibition, please make an appointment by emailing info@guenther-rarebooks.com.
Press tours can be arranged at any time.
