Visions of Knowledge and Wonder

In this new digital publication, Dr. Ina Nettekoven und Dr. Sara Öberg Strådal explore the ways in which nature and its inhabitants were understood, described and depicted in medieval thought. The selected manuscripts illustrate different medieval concepts and ideas of nature: from detailed descriptions of the natural world, allegorical tales of animals and their function in the Christian psychomachia, the practical and medicinal uses of plants, as well as the symbolic depictions of flowers in prayerbooks and the changing natural landscape in calendars linking the changing seasons to the ritual year.

Living with Nature

Living with Nature, the latest exhibition presented by Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books in the historic center of Basel, explores the ever-present dialogue between humans and their natural environment. An exclusive display of artworks covering almost a millennium of manuscript production, shows how humans coexisted, negotiated, struggled, exploited, and sought harmony with nature.
